PawClocks is a collection of free animal age calculators that translate your pet's age — or any animal's age — into a human equivalent. We cover everything from the most popular family pets to wild animals you'll never own but can't stop reading about.
Every calculator is built around real lifespan data from veterinary literature, zoo records, and peer-reviewed research. We don't use the oversimplified "multiply by 7" approach — we use species-specific formulas that reflect how animals actually age biologically.

How We Calculate Ages
Animal age conversion is genuinely more complex than most sites acknowledge. Here's our approach:
For dogs and cats
We use established veterinary guidelines — a logarithmic formula for dogs based on epigenetic research published in Cell Systems by UC San Diego scientists, and the AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines for cats. Both reflect how these animals actually age, not a simple multiplier.
For other mammals, reptiles, and birds
We use proportional lifespan mapping — taking the average captive lifespan for each species and mapping it proportionally to a human lifespan of approximately 80 years. We apply a curve to the early years to reflect the rapid growth and maturation most animals experience before settling into slower adult aging.
For long-lived and wild animals
Animals like the Greenland shark (400+ years) or bowhead whale (200+ years) require special consideration because the comparison to human years becomes more philosophical than biological. We use these conversions to give a sense of scale and context rather than a precise biological equivalence.
All lifespan data is sourced from the IUCN Red List, AZA Species Survival Plans, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and peer-reviewed scientific literature.
